Mentmore’s Lady Captain, Glynis Lawrence, held a charity dinner in aid of the Florence Nightingale Hospice. Thanks to the generosity of a large number of local businesses, there were some superb prizes in the grand raffle, and the members of Mentmore responded by raising an incredible £1337.50! A sell-out 98 ladies attended the dinner, with Mentmore’s Captain Sid James and general manager, Clint Moore, filling the remaining two spaces! After the raffle prizes were drawn, everyone was treated to a wonderful performance by Louise.
Before retiring, Glynis used to teach at Linslade Middle School where Louise was a student. Way back in 1992 Louise was a member of the “Joseph Choir” organised by Glynis which performed in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the London Palladium. It was an amazing experience for everyone, and Louise went on to follow her dream and become a star of the West End. Later this month she takes the leading role of Glinda in “Wicked.” Glynis has always kept in touch with Louise and followed her career and enjoyed all her stag performances, so she was delighted when Louise agreed to be her special guest.
Louise really has a wonderful voice and she sang a selection of songs from her favourite musicals, accompanied by Jon Ranger on keyboard. Highlights were undoubtedly “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” from Evita and “Memories” from Cats.
Louise herself said to Glynis afterwards, “I had a brilliant night, and thank you for inviting me to be part of it. I’m glad it was such a great success.”
Louise also offered 2 tickets for wicked which were auctioned for £200!
Glynis was quite emotional on the night and overwhelmed by the fantastic support she has received. Glynis, said: “It was a magical night for me. It was worth all the hard work and I’m glad everyone enjoyed it. The support I have received from everyone at Mentmore and also from the local community has been absolutely amazing. Thank you to everyone concerned, and especially to Louise for agreeing to be by guest on this very special night. I wish her every success in Wicked.”
