The newly fledged cycling team at Mentmore Golf & Country Club are preparing for the challenge ahead.
We are taking part in this year’s “Extra Mile Challenge” which takes us through France, Belgium and Germany, with a scenic route taking in the peaks and dips of the Black Forest. Training is getting off to a wobbly start as we find bikes to fit the team members, and the reality of our commitment sets in – just 83 days to go and counting..........

Travel:
We cross the Channel by Eurotunnel on the afternoon of Thursday 23rd September and drive to our hotels in Namur, Belgium, approximately 3 hours by autoroute. The Challenge starts early on Friday 24th, continuing on the 25th and finishing on Sunday 26th when we will enjoy a special Gala Dinner to celebrate the end of the Challenge. The return home on the Monday takes approximately 6 hours to reach the Calais Eurotunnel terminal.

Local golfer Carl Duke put together two excellent rounds of golf to win the 11th leg of the Jamega Professional Tour at Mentmore this week and take home a cheque for £4000.

The first day on Mentmore’s Rothschild course was bright and sunny with light winds, so low scores were predicted, which were achieved by Ryan Massetti and David Ginn who both ended the day on 7 under par 65. However, on the second day, which was equally warm, the players had to contend with a strong breeze and Massetti’s and Ginn’s lead evaporated to leave them 5 and 4 under par respectively. Meanwhile, Neil Reilly stormed through the field scoring a brilliant 64 to set an impressive early target of 8 under par 136 for the rest to beat.

Weather certainly did not dampen the spirits of the Mentmore ladies as 115 lady golfers took to the fairways in the Lady Captain's day on Tuesday the 8th June.

The competition was played over 27 holes with a 18 hole Stableford competition in the morning followed by a fun 9 hole Texas scramble format in the afternoon.
The lady golfers got more than they bargained for on the day and enjoyed homemade cakes and Pimms at the halfway house and even had the presence of celebrity duo ‘Ant & Dec’ on the day.

The very popular Mentmore Craft Fayre is to return – this year to Mentmore Golf and Country Club.

The Craft Fayre will be sited on the driving range consisting of a cluster of marquees displaying various stalls specialising in fine arts, crafts and homemade foods.

This is an excellent opportunity for the Club to raise extra revenue to facilitate the ongoing improvements to Mentmore Golf & Country Club for the benefit of all members. In addition there will be opportunities to help the Captains’ chosen charity by way of a buggy shuttle service from car park to the Craft Fayre entrance, exhibitor accommodation, a charity donation stand within the Fayre and a charity function on the Friday evening.

Iwan Griffiths of Aberdare Golf Club in South Wales, was delighted to win his first Jamega Pro Golf Tour event over the splendid Rosebery course at the Mentmore Golf and Country Club. Griffiths put together two fine rounds of  66 and 68 for a winning total of 10 under par 134.

On receiving his winners cheque for £5,000 Griffiths praised the  condition of the golf course and the efforts of the Jamega Team in organizing such an excellent tournament.

Second by a single shot came Matthew Cort  winning £2,500 with rounds of  65 and 70 . In third place was Robert Watkins who picked up £1,500 with scores of  69 and 67.

Mentmore Golf and Country Club provides two challenging but fair golf courses to test players of all standards and  the  hospitality you receive in the clubhouse is excellent.

We will be back at Mentmore later in the year  to play The Rothschild course where last year the winning total was 15 under par!

Mentmore’s Lady Captain, Glynis Lawrence, held a charity dinner in aid of the Florence Nightingale Hospice. Thanks to the generosity of a large number of local businesses, there were some superb prizes in the grand raffle, and the members of Mentmore responded by raising an incredible £1337.50! A sell-out 98 ladies attended the dinner, with Mentmore’s Captain Sid James and general manager, Clint Moore, filling the remaining two spaces! After the raffle prizes were drawn, everyone was treated to a wonderful performance by Louise.

Before retiring, Glynis used to teach at Linslade Middle School where Louise was a student. Way back in 1992 Louise was a member of the “Joseph Choir” organised by Glynis which performed in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the London Palladium. It was an amazing experience for everyone, and Louise went on to follow her dream and become a star of the West End. Later this month she takes the leading role of Glinda in “Wicked.” Glynis has always kept in touch with Louise and followed her career and enjoyed all her stag performances, so she was delighted when Louise agreed to be her special guest.
