Nick Smith will attempt to pull a 1.8 ton vehicle around a 1.8 mile track to raise funds and awareness for Cancer research.

Nick who is a 43 year old company director decided to take on this challenge after he lost his mother to ovarian cancer just over 2 years ago. He always wanted to do something different for charity and decided that he will pull a 1.8 ton car around a 1.8 mile track. Nick, who resides in Wing - Buckinghamshire, said: “The inspiration to this challenge came from having to push a car in a garage at my local MOT centre. I realised I had the strength to push the car quite well and the centre owner was suitably impressed with my efforts. I then thought I should take it to the next level. You have to agree that it is certainly an original idea!”

Sunday 6th December saw Nick having a test run on the actual track where the challenge will take place in March 2010. The weather conditions where not in his favour as there was a strong headwind and the overnight rain had left the tarmac wet under foot. Nick put this all aside and bravely strapped on his harness and connected this to the front of the test car. It was a great moment to see the car leave the starting point and to watch Nick gain momentum over the beginning part of the track It was all smooth sailing until reaching a slight incline in the track about 600 yards from the start! This will prove to be one of the first bigger hurdles on the actual day of the event, once this incline was negotiated he managed to get the car around the first bend which was gratefully followed by a slightly declined section which will prove to be a great respite on the day of the challenge.

New club Captains Sid James and Glynis Lawrence ‘drove in’ at Mentmore Golf & Country Club.

The traditional ceremony took place on Sunday the 29th November at the golf club. Both Captains had to use a traditional wooden driver to hit their drives down the first hole. As if using the wooden driver was not enough pressure the festivities drew a sizeable crowd to watch them drive off too.

New club Captain Sid James who is a Mentmore resident and one of the founder members of the club, hit a great 200 yard drive straight down the middle of the fairway. Sid, who played football for Ivinghoe / Pitstone FC, said: “I look forward to my year in office and would like to focus on the club’s social calendar and work with the members to make Mentmore a truly enjoyable place to play golf. This is one of the biggest honours ever bestowed on me besides the birth of my four sons.”

New lady club Captain Glynis Lawrence who lives in Leighton Buzzard joined Mentmore in 2000, hit a cracking 171 yard drive straight down the middle of the fairway. Glynis, who taught at Linslade Middle School for 25 years, said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be a ladies Captain of such a prestigious club such as Mentmore Golf Club. I am looking forward to organising fun golf competitions and social events for both the lady and men members.”

Throughout their year in office both Captains will have various fund raising activities and have chosen Florence Nightingale Hospice, Aylesbury as the 2010 Captains Charity. Also, a percentage of the charity money raised will go towards the ‘Nathan Layton Memorial Fund’ which is close to Captain Sid James’s heart.

The challenge will take place on the back end of March on the Dunsfold Park race track which is commonly known as the ‘Top Gear’ racing track.

Although Nick used to be a successful swimmer in his hey day his body and fitness levels are no where near the standard needed for such a high endurance strength challenge. Mentmore Golf & Country Club’s Christine Sparks a personal trainer at the club realised this and has taken Nick under her wing. She will be personal training Nick on multiple days throughout the weeks running up to the challenge.
